Lost things and broken bones

Lieutenant Azulon’s personal diary,
commander of the 5th Enclave Platoon.

Few days before departure:
It’s been 3 weeks since I got the orders to move and station at one of our research facilities on the Western coast south of San Francisco. It’s a relatively hidden location, no brotherhood patrols have been spotted in a 60km radius and there is no indication that the situation will change anytime soon. I still don’t understand why the general staff agreed to send out regular Enclave patrols west of Navarro. The brotherhood’s response was immediate, resulting in light skirmishes across our eastern sphere of influence in California. Even though the decision to hire mercenary bands in order to sack the NCR capital few years before was a delightful sight to observe, while our core regiments were bombarding the town, to our surprise they rebuild the town with even more impressive fortifications and deployed pre-war howitzers. But to the main point, I am ordered to be in immediate departure status and wait for any orders from my superior officer, wouldn’t be half as bad if I could spent the time in my quarters. The damn superior keeps calling in and ordering me to do a vehicle check-up every 4 hours, what the hell could break while the car is parked underground all the time?!

Day 1, 5:44am:
Finally some action! I received the orders to move out, to transport some a container filled with bio-gel with a something spongy swimming inside and a few data holodisks. During the debrief the mission sounded to be of the highest priority, yet I was given light equipment and I have to take the route just by the mountains, as soon as I enter the area infested by mariposa Super Mutants my orders are to stay low and let one of our squads distract their attention.

Day 2, 1:23pm:
The rough terrain slows my movement, the distracting squad engaged in heavy combat. So far I am just a few kilometres into super mutant territory, progressing slower than expected.

Day 2, 1:55pm:
The radio connection with distraction squad was lost, the mutants might notice my presence soon, their job was essential to the mission. The situation looks grim.

Day 2, 2:24pm:
After 30 minutes, I see reflector lights coming my way, mutants don’t fit into any vehicle so I am certain the squad disengaged the fight and now changed their mission to escort me directly. I try to call them in through the radio, but I get no response. I change my frequency to check the situation with headquarters, my superior officer informs me that the distraction squad was decimated by the mutants and my orders are to abort the mission and return to the research facility in haste, he also informs me that the incoming vehicle cannot be ours, the only squad in the vicinity was the one giving me cover. Wait! Those insignia! That’s the damn Brotherhood!

They caught me before I could turn the car around…

Day 2, 2:31pm:
Did they think I will surrender and let them take me prisoner? Forget it! Maybe I should’ve ran instead of trying to take one down and wouldn’t get hit by them, doesn’t matter. Now I’m stuck in this cave with a broken arm, without any radio signal to call for backup from down here. The only option for me is to wait them out. Surely they won’t be around much longer unless they want to meet the mutant’s welcoming comitee. By now they most likely found the container holding whatever is inside and holodisks I was supposed to deliver, I doubt it whether they are willing to take the risk to search for me in here. If I get out from here alive, I’ll have to report everything to my superior… I’d rather try to teach a deathclaw fetch, than have that conversation to be honest. Maybe the copies of these holodisks I have made before the mission might dissuade him from the idea of including me in the next experiments… Damn, I’ll lie down here for a while, the bullet wound hurts…

Lieutenant Azulon’s personal diary,
Commander of the 5th Enclave Platoon.

Couple of days later:
Somehow the radio distress signal was picked up by an outpost to the north, I’m a lucky son of a gun, huh? The doctor told me I must have been unconscious for two days there. As soon as they found me they loaded me on a truck and transported back, good that we take care of our guys.  Now I lay in the hospital being drugged with tons of chems to get me on my feet, on the plus side I kept my arm, a bit numb but still there. Tomorrow they’ll discharge me and I already got an order to present my direct report to the superior, great…

After the mission debrief:
The mission is to find some escapees, sounds easy enough. Fresh out the vault, no idea how the world works now, how HARSH it can be and nobody will miss them. The information they manage to extract could prove highly beneficial to any other organization, apparently it concerns some new-fangled tissue regeneration without any use of invasive chemicals. We get the experiment data directly transmitted, although if it got out to our rivals like the Brotherhood of Steel or NCR who have a much bigger yet technologically inferior army, such case would be a disaster for the government of America. I have to get to Klamath, as it’s the closest town to the vault, and ask some questions there. As always no witnesses can be left behind.

Before the interrogation:
I asked around, the vault escapees have encoutered a peasant just outside Klamath, who directed them to the local bathhouse for the night. So I have to question that man and the person running the bathhouse. One of them must know something.

After the interrogation:
First I started questioning the peasant, he was easily ‘persuaded’ into cooperation, people should be more specific about their requests... The information he provided me with is worrying, sounds like the brotherhood somehow got intel on what’s going on. How could this be, they are always a step ahead of me! After getting rid of the first witness I proceeded to the bathhouse owner, unfortunately that lady heard the shots and got a heart attack, too bad. At least she saved me some bullets. The visit at Klamath gave me enough information, to go on with my mission. No crucial witnesses were left behind, I have to quick!
